The Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle

*

This book really tested my patience. It is wild. It confused me at some points. The plot is so convluted that I think it would have taken Stuart Turton, the author, a lot of time to piece this book together.

The Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle is a thriller following an investigation into the murder of a girl who is murdered every single night in a loop. The main character, Aiden, switches bodies of many other characters (called hosts) in an attempt to get different points of view that will help him solve the murder mystery before the end of the night. It is only if and when Aiden solves the mystery, that he can escape the loop. Yes, it is wild. It is weird.

Almost every host that Aiden occupies is a terrible person. Bell is described to be very boring at the start and as the story unfolds, he is revelead to have a dark side. Mr Collins spends his entire time in agony. Ravencourt is described as immobile, fat and ugly. All the main characters get very grim as the story unfolds.

I just could not like this book for three reasons:

  1. Fat Shaming of Ravencourt character was just too much for me to handle. See here for some of the excerpts. I found this very very tasteless.

  2. The book is narrated in a point of view of a character that has committed rape two hours before certain sequence of events. The impact on the victim is almost ignored. And as a reader, when I learn this, I feel like I don't want to hear his point of view at all. Again, I found this tasteless.

  3. None of the hosts are good people. They all have very dark shades. In a story, I'd expect some good characters and some bad with some twists and turns. But, it is not enjoyable to read a book where pretty much every character is boring and terrible.

Overall, I think the author has put in a lot of effort into this book and the storyline, but I can not recommend this book for happy reading. It made me very uncomfortable for the reasons mentioned above.
